PendriveOpera: the portable Opera installation

Polska wersja / Polish version

How many times you need to place Opera in a different directory and keep your settings untouched (toolbars, bookmarks, buttons, skins, Wand passwords, keyboard & mouse settings)? Of course, you can install Opera in different directories, many, many times, but what about consistent and up to date profile/settings, that don't depend on version you currently run?

A system changing? A HDD cleaning? Or, maybe, you just want to have your extremely enhanced and personalized Opera on a USB drive (referred to as USB stick, pendrive, removable disk, etc.) so that you can use it everywhere, on different machines?

Now it's possible! All you have to do is:

  • 1.Make a backup of your current Opera installation!
  • 2.Download PendriveOpera (freeware & opensource) and unpack it somewhere
  • 3.Make a backup of your current Opera installation, for Christ sake -- this software is BETA!
  • 4.Run PendriveOpera: java PendriveOpera
    or: java PendriveOpera c:\current\path\to\opera e:\new\path
If you don’t have Java installed, click here.

HINT:
Q: But each machine makes my USB drive to be visible under different path/letter!
A: Create many version for every possible occasion ;-) You have to restore Opera from backup after each run of PendriveOpera, but I plan to change it soon.

PendriveOpera checks only .ini files in every directory in the Opera's current installation path. Are there any other files that need to be parsed (consist paths)? PendriveOpera will find every occurrence of old path and replace it with a new one, defined by the user. PendriveOpera isn't case sensitive, feel free to wRitE pAthS aS yOu wAnT.

This software is still in the beta stage. Probably I shouldn't have published it, but hey, I'm like Google Inc.! I want to watch people playing with my software ;-) PendriveOpera works for me, but may not work for you. So do report a bug!

I tested PendriveOpera on Opera 8.51tp2 with ALL files in ONE directory (Windows XP), and have no idea if other Operas keep their files in more than one path. However, *nix users can use a lighter shell or even vim script to make what PendriveOpera does.

I wasn't able to check changing Windows paths to *nix ones by now, but I'm going to. Wanna help me? ;-)

Flame section

Q: I can do it by myself, with notepad, you looser!
A: Be my guest, do it in less than 3 sec.

Q: Why did you write this program in Java with so many unnecessary lines, you idiot?
A: Because IBM wanted me to practice Java, and because I use this program for another task, where scanning directories is essential and have to be stack-implemented. Moreover, I provide you with a source code, so you can easily cut the sh*t off, can't you? ;-)

Q: *, you *!
A: :-)

TODO:
* Parsing Windows profile to make it usable in *nix and vice versa.

Any suggestions?
